Some short memories from our recent holiday to ‘Olhos de Água’, situated midway between Albufeira and Vilamoura on the Algarve. The name refers to the freshwater springs on the beach, visible when the sea is on low tide.

We hit the village during their annual Sardine Festival, three evenings from 8 pm to 1 am, Thursday 7th August to Sunday 9th August, beachside at Praia d’Olhos D’Agua.

Great music and dancing – 90% of the people are local Portuguese, so it’s a lovely family atmosphere. Inexpensive tickets from the kiosk near the front – well worth it and a great atmosphere. If you don’t care for sardines, there is a carnivore option available. But the sardines are thoroughly recommended.

During our holiday, the temperature was very, very hot. A couple of days, the heat was exhausting with the Met Office reporting 39 °C temperatures, feeling like 48 °C. It was no wonder bushfires were spreading in the interior.
We sat around in the shade and in the pool in an attempt to keep cool. On three days, we ventured to Albufeira twice and Vilamoura once. Our first visit was to Albufeira’s old town, then taking a novel ride on a tuk-tuk to the bright colours of the marina. We returned on our penultimate day to the marina for a boat ride to see the dolphins and the remarkable Benagil Caves.
