Following a recent operation (appendicitis- at my age!), we chose to travel by train to the northeast of Scotland to see a long-time folk singer with whom we had enjoyed a holiday on a remote part of the West Coast of Scotland, many, many years ago. Indeed, his boat broke down, and we hosted both him and his son on board our RIB. His name is Dougie MacLean, the well-known singer-songwriter. He’s played with Runrig in the past but is most famous today for his beautiful song “Caledonia”.
We enjoyed a wonderful evening of music and song, often including audience participation. Of course, we met and spoke with Dougie after his performance. Remarkably, he recognised us after more than 35 years!
Arbroath
Arbroath Smokies, haddock, is famous for its Protected Geographical Indication (PGI): this designation covers products whose “production, processing or preparation” takes place in a specific area.
It is also the town where the Signal Tower was established. Today, the Museum, located near the town’s picturesque harbour, tells the fascinating story of the Bell Rock Lighthouse designed by the famous engineer, Robert Stevenson (1772-1850), as well as an insight into Arbroath’s fishing and maritime past.
