2024 – Australia: Cairns

A fabulous train journey to the MacAlister Range in Northern Australia, offering spectacular views of the Barron River from the rail line to Kuranda, situated 330 metres above sea level – the Village in the Rainforest.

A heritage-listed railway line that has been in operation since 1891. The train meanders through 15 handcrafted tunnels over 55 bridges as you travel from Gimuy (Cairns) to Ngunbay (Kuranda) on the Atherton Tableland, a fertile plateau. The historic Kuranda Railway Station, constructed in 1915, is regarded as the most picturesque railway station in Australia.

The First Nations, Djabugay people, are the traditional custodians of this part of the Great Dividing Range. This Range stretches more than 3,500 km (2,175 miles) from Dauan Island in the Torres Strait off the northern tip of Cape York Peninsula, running the entire length of the eastern coastline through Queensland and New South Wales, then turning west across Victoria before finally fading into the Wimmera plains The width of the Range varies from about 160 km (100 miles) to over 300 km (190 miles).

Next we went to the Army Duck and Rainforest Station. Posed on the sign was a Pied Cormorant. We took an Army Duck and then a stroll through the Wild Life Park.
