2024 – Indonesia: Jakarta & Bali

We arrived in Jakarta at the start of the monsoon season. The traffic was a nightmare, and disheartening was the sight of rubbish floating in the sea. I was not surprised to learn that Jakarta is the second-most polluted city in the world, just behind Mumbai in India.

However, amidst all this chaos and pollution, there was something quite illuminating: despite their surroundings, the majority of the population always wore lovely smiles. This serves as a reminder that happiness can thrive even in less-than-ideal conditions. After our brief stay, we were eager to escape our time in Jakarta, where we hoped for cleaner air and a more vibrant atmosphere! On to Bali.

Masks serve as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. They often represent deities or mythological creatures that play pivotal roles in local lore. In Bali, for instance, intricate masks are used in traditional dance performances that not only entertain but also invoke blessings from the spirits. Similarly, in Jakarta’s cultural scene, masks can represent ancestors or local legends, each telling a story that’s been passed down through generations.

Beautifully dressed Balinese dancers greeted us at our cultural afternoon show and dinner. See the video below. They feted us with flowers before giving each of us a Frangipani to wear.

Also, Fran’s new boyfriend greeted us at the entrance. When he approached her, she was thinking about what dance moves to do with him! He held out his hand, and when Frances placed hers in his, he led her and the group to dinner.
